Whey Protein Isolate vs Whey Protein Concentrate

WPI vs WPC: What's the Difference and Why Rebuild Uses Both

If you've spent any time shopping for protein powder, you've probably seen whey protein isolate (WPI) and whey protein concentrate (WPC) on labels. Most brands pick one. We didn't. Here's why Rebuild uses a 50/50 blend of both and why that decision matters for your results.

What is Whey Protein?

Whey is a natural by-product of the cheese-making process. When milk is processed, it separates into curds (casein) and liquid whey. That liquid is then filtered and dried into the raw protein powder used in supplements.

Both WPI and WPC start from the same place. The difference comes down to how much filtration each one goes through.

WPC: The Foundation

Whey protein concentrate goes through two stages of filtration. The result is a protein powder that sits around 70–80% protein by weight, with small amounts of naturally occurring fats, carbohydrates and lactose still present.

Those trace dairy compounds are actually a good thing for some people. They give WPC a thicker, creamier texture and a fuller flavour. For anyone without lactose sensitivity, WPC is a solid, well-rounded source of protein.

WPI: The Refined Version

Whey protein isolate goes one step further. An additional ultrafiltration process strips out almost all remaining fat, carbohydrates and lactose. What you're left with is a protein powder sitting at around 90%+ protein by weight — one of the purest forms available.

The practical upside: WPI digests faster and is easier on the gut. If you've ever experienced bloating or discomfort from standard protein powders, lactose is usually the culprit. WPI removes nearly all of it.

Grass-Fed Matters - Here's Why

Not all whey is equal. The quality of the raw material depends heavily on how the source cattle are raised.

Grass-fed dairy cows produce milk with a different nutritional profile to grain-fed cattle. Grass-fed whey tends to have a higher concentration of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), better omega-3 to omega-6 ratios, and retains more of its natural bioactive compounds when cold-processed.

Grain-fed protein is cheaper to produce. We don't use it.

Rebuild is made from grass-fed whey. Full stop.

So Why Does Rebuild Use Both?

Most brands choose one or the other. We chose both — deliberately.

A 50/50 blend of WPI and WPC gives you the best of what each brings:

From the WPI: Fast absorption. High protein purity. Minimal lactose. Clean digestion.

From the WPC: Fuller amino acid profile. Richer texture. Natural dairy bioactives intact.

The result is 27g of protein per serve from a dual-source whey that absorbs efficiently without sacrificing the natural compounds that make grass-fed whey worth using in the first place.

No padding. No filler protein. Just two complementary forms of the same high-quality raw material, doing exactly what protein is supposed to do.

What About Lactose Sensitivity?

Rebuild is naturally low in lactose. The WPI component removes the majority of it. If you've previously found protein powders hard on your stomach, Rebuild is worth trying — most customers who've had issues with standard whey report no problems.

That said, if you have a diagnosed lactose intolerance or dairy allergy, speak to your health professional before adding any whey-based product to your routine.

If You Want Pure WPI, We Have That Too

  • Milk sourced directly from grass-fed, non-hormone-treated cows.
  • The protein is carefully extracted directly from milk and treated at a lower temperature preserving the nutritious properties.
  • The latest filtration techniques are used to remove unwanted fat and lactose while maintaining the proprietary structure.
  • The protein is gently dried without using chemicals ensuring that the end product is an ‘intact’ whey protein

Rebuild is our most complete protein — but it's not the right choice for everyone. Some people don't need collagen. Some are tracking macros down to the decimal. Some just want the leanest, fastest-absorbing protein available with nothing else in the formula.

That's what our Premium Whey Protein Isolate is built for.

27.8g of protein per 30g serve. Less than 1g of fat. Less than 1g of carbs. 99.9% lactose-free. Three ingredients: grass-fed whey protein isolate, natural flavour, organic stevia.

No WPC in the blend. No collagen. No extras. Just the highest concentration of protein we can put in a scoop.

The Tuff Supps WPI is the right choice if you are:

  • Cutting or in a calorie deficit. Every gram of fat and carb counts when you're dialling in. WPI keeps your protein high and everything else as close to zero as possible.
  • Highly lactose sensitive. At 99.9% lactose-free, it's as close to dairy-free as whey gets without switching to plant protein entirely.
  • Focused on speed of absorption. With virtually no fat or lactose to slow digestion, WPI hits your bloodstream fast. If you train fasted or need a rapid post-workout hit, this is it.
  • On a GLP-1 medication. Suppressed appetite means you need maximum protein from minimum volume. No heavy texture, no thick consistency — just clean protein that's easy to get down.
  • A purist. Three ingredients. You know exactly what you're putting in your body. Nothing to question.

The Bottom Line

WPI and WPC are not competing products. They're complementary. WPI gives you purity and fast absorption. WPC gives you texture, bioactives and a fuller nutritional profile from the whole milk fraction.

Using both together isn't a compromise. It's a more complete approach to protein.

Rebuild delivers 27g of grass-fed whey protein per serve - WPI and WPC, cold-processed, naturally sweetened with organic stevia, no fillers, no artificial sweeteners.

One tub. One scoop. Done.

If you want pure WPI with nothing else, our Premium Whey Protein Isolate has you covered.
